Chapter Thirteen

Christian didn’t spend the night. Thought it took some doing to pull from Case’s arms and wander across to his place, he just wanted to do things right with this guy and not taint it by wearing out his welcome.

But from somewhere in the back of his mind, a shrill sound drew him from his sleep. He groaned and shoved an arm from beneath the sheets for the ringing telephone. Somewhere along the night, it’d gotten way too cold with the air conditioner. Frowning, he pulled the phone under the sheets and pressed it to his ear. “This had better be one hot man or I’m hanging up.” He groaned.

“Funny. You awake?”

“I am now. Mas, what’s going on? Do you know what time it is?”

“I know and I’m sorry. But I wouldn’t be calling you this early if it wasn’t important.”

“Tell me what’s going on, then.”

“There’s no easy way to say this, so I’m just going to come right out and say it. Lucas is dead.”

“What do you mean Lucas is dead? It’s not April first, is it?”

“Dude, pay attention for a second, would you? Lucas Gonzales, our Lucas, is dead. We had another massive blaze yesterday, and he got caught in the building during a flashback. I’m starting to think these fires aren’t accidents anymore. Whitfield is investigating and Borders went back to go over the one you were caught in.”

Christian jerked upward in bed and rubbed his eyes before shoving his feet to the ground. Resting his elbows on his knees, he suddenly felt as if he was punched in the gut. Lucas was a great fireman, but greatness had nothing to do with anything when you’re in an inferno with the world burning around you. Memories of his day in one returned with vengeance. He had to open eyes and fight to make the images and the smell of burning flesh go away. He felt like his sky was burning then, and he ached to have Case beside him, holding him, making it stop. “So they think its arson?”

“Yeah. This is the fourth fire, remember? All the fires are around our house, so I’m going out on a limb to say someone is targeting us specifically, and I’d be damned if I knew why.”

“Don’t jump to conclusions, Mas. The world isn’t out to get us.”

“You’re right. The world isn’t out to get us—just one sick, son of a bitch.”

“Okay. I’m coming home.”

“Chris, we don’t want to have to worry about you too. Stay put. Right now you’re safe where you are. No one really knows you’re there except me.”

“No. If you’re right and someone has a bulls-eye painted on our backs, we have to fight. This is our livelihood. Did anyone call the cops?”

“And tell them what?”

Christians inhaled. “I’m coming home. Gimme a bit to check in with Case and pack up a few things. Don’t tell anyone I’m coming, okay?”

“No worries from this end. But I’d like to go on record as saying this is bullshit.
